Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for Assessment of Competence

The concept of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) was developed to support assessment within a competency-based education framework. EPAs describe essential tasks of professional work an individual can be trusted to perform without direct supervision in a given context, once sufficient competence has been demonstrated. Direct observation and entrustment of learners is core. Entrustment can be ad hoc, used formatively with numerous developmental assessments with feedback or for summative decision making. They can be used for self- and peer assessment to developed self-regulatory and confidence skills. This workshop will focus on how to best use EPAs for formative and summative assessments and approaches to development and implementation.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to define fundamental concepts and utility of EPAs; define entrustment approaches for formative and summative assessments; apply ad hoc entrustment decisions to case scenarios and/or design a program for faculty development.
